Two for the Show – a Contest!

March 26, 2013

in the generous life

I just won 2 movie tickets from Moolala!

I started entering all their free drawings when I entered one on a lark and won a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant of my choice. I figured it couldn’t hurt. Turns out I must be on God’s “bless her” list.   :)   (Do check out Moolala! They have great daily deals and you can earn a bit too!)

Well, small problem. The tickets are for CineMark Theaters and there are no CineMarks in my part of the world.

Silver lining: I’ve been thinking about having another contest, but wanted to offer something other than a book (they’re not bad, it’s just the usual prize and I wanted to do something different). Now I have movie tickets to offer!

So to the contest …

Share your movie date night idea(s) as a comment to this post. It can be a list of your favorite movies for date night or something you do to make movie night special (whether out and about or snuggled up at home).

I’ll randomly pick a poster and announce a winner on April 8th. The winner will receive the tickets and have a frugal start for a date with their sweetie.

I really have to smile about this one! What would really make a movie date night out special for me and my sweetie is to actually go out to a movie, since they cost so much! We don’t often see movies unless we borrow them from a friend who already owns one worth seeing. :)

Lisa March 26, 2013 at 5:27 am

My husband LOVES to go to the movies. He sees it as real quality time. The best part of the evening to me happens after the movie. We most of the time take hours taking about the movie: its world-view, character development, etc. We have had some interesting conversations and pretty funny ones too. Our first date was to see a double-feature:)

Cristy March 26, 2013 at 5:35 am

I actually do secret shopping so the movie and dinner costs about $10 instead of $70. That makes us both happy :-) since we do live on a budget. One of my favorites is mention me when you sign up!

Our church offers a parent’s night out once every couple months and we always take advantage of it. But instead of a parent’s night “out”, we have a parent’s night “in”. We lay out a blanket on the carpet in the living room and watch a movie on the big tv, one the kids’ aren’t allowed to watch, order food from a delivery place (or pick something up on the way home), and just enjoy each other’s company. The church keeps the kids for 4 hours so sometimes we can either get in 2 movies or some romance.

Tina March 26, 2013 at 6:34 am

When we go out to the movies we always stop at the red lobster for dinner, shrimp and crab! Yummy!

julianne March 26, 2013 at 6:43 am

My husband will pop corn on the stove and we snuggle up on the couch after the kids go to bed. So cozy!

Katie March 26, 2013 at 6:44 am

We haven’t done this one yet ourselves, but a friend and her husband would take a random amount of money for their date night, like $18.62, and they HAD to spend all of it, exactly. Made it very creative at the end of the date at the store or wherever trying to finish off the exact cents. Added a bit of excitement and adventure to their nights.

Dawn March 26, 2013 at 7:22 am

I hate to post so early in the game since higher numbers usually get picked! But my hubby’s birthday is right around when his favorite movie saga – Star Trek – comes out! We also rarely get to see movies AT the theater because of budget and babysitters. HOWEVER, here’s my thought. We made a pact early in our marriage concerning movies. Chick flicks don’t need to be seen on a big screen with big sound, so we save our movie splurges for action/epic films. Squandering money on Princess Diaries 2 is what finally made me come to my senses, which Hubby was quite thankful for. I haven’t regretted the pact…ever!

(Just a note from Lori: I use a to generate a number. So it doesn’t matter in what order you post. Every number has the same chance of being picked.)

Bridgett March 26, 2013 at 7:41 am

I must admit. I don’t have a great idea or comment, but I just wanted to be entered in the drawing. :)

jill hoke March 26, 2013 at 7:43 am

We are big movie fans. Like Dawn, we mostly go to action/adventure movies for date nights. Chick flick movies are nice to watch at home, because you can snuggle up together in bed.

Denae March 26, 2013 at 8:07 am

My husband especially loves going out to the theater to see movies. But we don’t do it often obviously due to cost, and try to make our movie nights at home fun ones :) Drinks are a must, so depending on what we’re watching we’ll grab some wine and cheese (or chocolate!), or beeritas and chips. We have a lot of fun exploring movies and shows that were popular when we were younger, and laugh together at how silly they are–for example, we recently watched Xena: Warrior Princess! Good times. It’s always a bonus when the acting is terrible :)

Kelley March 26, 2013 at 8:23 am

Since we have a three-year-old and a one-year-old, most of our dates happen after the boys are in bed. We recently re-watched all of the Harry Potter films, in order of course, over the period of about two months. Made me want to reread all of the books, too!

lissa March 26, 2013 at 8:42 am

we usually go for action/adventure and rarely go to the movie theatre. We mostly use red box. We really enjoyed Lincoln and argo recently

Lily March 26, 2013 at 8:51 am

So even though there is a Cinemark literally walking distance from the apartment, we are big Netflixers for the sake of being frugal..but when we do go to a movie my tip is to wait until there is a movie we BOTH really want to see in theaters. When we just randomly decide to go to a movie and see what’s playing, it seems like we always end up seeing something that just one of us really wants to see. But if you keep your eye on the showtimes regularly…a movie is bound to come up that both people are excited about and it can be a big event to look foward to :)

Wendy March 26, 2013 at 9:31 am

Thank you so much for your blog. I look forward to your insight everyday. I am in a struggling marriage. But, we both try so we are not without hope. A date night out just the two of us would be wonderful. I am a stay at home mom, I homeschool and my husband has been unemployed since November. Thanks again for your blog!

Jamie Allen March 26, 2013 at 9:43 am

We LOVE to get out every single blanket we own, make a big thick pallet in the floor and watch a movie in front of a fire!! In fact – we did this about 3 weeks ago when our town had a record-breaking blizzard and didn’t get up from the floor for over 8 hours! (parents had the kiddo and we couldn’t get out to go get him!) Our backs were killing us the next day but it was a WONDERFUL time!!!

Rita March 26, 2013 at 9:51 am

Movie date nights for us are usually Sunday morning 1st showing because that is when they offer discounts.

A great date for us is a big breakfast with good conversation and a couple of movies if we can get the showtimes to work out. One his pick and the other her pick.

Afterward some time to discuss both films at a local watering hole/dessert shop or living room floor.

Yvonne March 26, 2013 at 9:57 am

For Christmas, I gave my husband 12 envelopes, each envelope has a different date night idea, one for each month of this year (I found the idea on Pinterest!). One of my favorites so far was creating bucket lists. We have been married for 22 years now and it was fun to dream about things at this point of our life/marriage.

Candy March 26, 2013 at 10:44 am

A movie date night for my husband and I usually means staying at home as we are on a tight budget. Our boys are 17 and 18, so they venture out for the weekends a lot. So… Movie night: pick up a dish of barbecue ribs from our favorite Chinese restaurant (one serving is enough to feed us both), lock the door, strip down (we are home alone) and enjoy the show.

Rachel S. March 26, 2013 at 11:33 am

My hubby and I, for a while, had a tradition of taking the motorcycle or scooter to the movies and getting drenched on the way home on our anniversary! LOL freezing cold but still funny. A perfect movie date nit for us? Just being able to go out and enjoy a movie and not have to worry about if the kids would be interrupting us any minute.

Amanda March 26, 2013 at 12:07 pm

We like to rent movies from the Redbox as a special night at home after the kiddos are in bed. My hubby will use his phone app to throw out several choices. It is fun to hear about what he chooses and then he will search and search all the local Redbox locations to find the one we pick. It is an adventure at times to drive all over the Metroplex to get it :) of course early bed time for the kiddos and after hours snacks and coffee for us!

Tam March 26, 2013 at 12:07 pm

We tend to borrow a couple of movies from the library and make snacks at home for our movie nights.

Julie W March 26, 2013 at 12:23 pm

In the rare occassion that we go to a movie (if we splurge and have a date night-we don’t want to go sit and not talk during a movie) but if we do, I love that we hold hands during the movie. Thanks for the giveaway and I will check out Moolala.

Heather Ratliff March 26, 2013 at 12:46 pm

We’ve been recording movies on our Tivo. We enjoy watching them after the kids go to bed.

Ouida Boyd March 26, 2013 at 1:40 pm

We like old romantic movies like “Pride and Prejudice”. We pop some popcorn and sit on a couch close together and enjoy it all with appropriate nudges and hugs. Now that most all our children are gone, we are free to do this most any night of the week. After 43 years, I have to say that marriage does get better and better. It is worth whatever it takes to make the love grow.

heidi pardue March 26, 2013 at 2:25 pm

my idea of a great date night would be going to see Safe Home which is newly out. it is a romatic movie and to have a night out together watching a movie about romance would be wonderful.. or I would even be very happy with seeing an action film if that would make him happy!

Kacie March 26, 2013 at 5:56 pm

Since my hubby and I have a 7 month old little girl and its often hard to find a sitter(she won’t fall asleep for anyone but us at night) what we do for movie night is get a redbox movie and after little one is asleep, we each grab a snack and snuggle up on the couch. This way if we happen to fall asleep(infants and full time jobs are very tiring!) or if little one wakes up(she’s currently teething) we can always pause it. And if we have to keep it for an extra day and finish it tomorrow. It is only $1. Very budget and family friendly! And once little one gets older we can include her in our little movie night!

Missionary Mom March 26, 2013 at 6:31 pm

Hmmm… Our best movie date night was not actually at night. We went to see an epic movie (Australia) on a matinee, and we were the only ones in the theatre! It was great because we were able to discuss the movie the way we would at home (without whispering), enjoy our home-made (contraband) snacks without fear of reprisal, and cuddle and smooch shamelessly. Awesome date.

J (Hot, Holy & Humorous) March 26, 2013 at 7:29 pm

Our favorite movie nights are ordering take-out Chinese food, getting a glass of wine for me and a bottle of beer for him, and watching something quirky or adventurous. I did a post a long time ago with romantic movies that even a guy will watch: If the movie runs long, we pull out the popcorn and a blanket to get cozy.

PK March 27, 2013 at 5:57 pm

For a short while we had an at-home date night with dinner, dessert, and a movie. One person would pick the movie and dessert and the other would cook dinner (or something like that). Next time around we would switch.

Lori March 27, 2013 at 6:00 pm

We seldom go to the movie theatre because it costs so much and if we wait just a couple of months we can rent them…..but our very first date was dinner and a movie..I knew someone who worked at the theatre and he let us in free so we’ve been frugal movie goer’s for a long time..:))

Mallory March 27, 2013 at 8:20 pm

I enjoy making break-and-bake cookies before movie night. It’s a nice treat. =]

Lauren March 28, 2013 at 5:58 am

Jason and I have a three month old son, so we haven’t had a lot of dates in the last couple months. But when we have we usually eat dinner and then either rent a movie that we’ve been wanting to see or we go see a new movie.

Whitney March 28, 2013 at 8:24 am

Recently my hub and I went on a double date with our best friends to the dollar theater to watch The Hobbit, and before hand treated them to dinner with a bunch of gift cards for Olive Garden we’d acquired from Christmastime. It was a very enjoyable evening!

Karen March 28, 2013 at 5:54 pm

We have seven kids and are in the homestretch of our parenting years. We couldn’t go out much when the kids were young, so now I feel young dating my husband. We don’t have a theatre here with a variety of movies, so once in a while we go out of town and make a day of all the things we can’t do locally such as shopping for things not available in our area, eating out at restaurants we don’t have, and a movie that isn’t playing at home. It’s a relaxing day for the two of us!

kristy goode March 29, 2013 at 3:15 pm

our favorite is FREE movies from the library! we can order them from 32 libraries all over our state… so most any movie can be found, for free! :-)
