Take a Walk in His Shoes

The other day Paul was writing a post for his blog and he was searching for a word. You know how it is, the essence of the word is floating around in your head, but the word itself won’t slip down onto your tongue.

We eventually figured it out. The word was empathy.

em·pa·thy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another

I stood there for awhile (we work at standing desks) and realized that’s a concept we all need to understand and grow in. If we can understand what our spouse is going through we are more likely to be kind, supportive, and encouraging.

Talk a Walk in His Shoes - If we can understand what our spouse is going through we are more likely to be kind, supportive, and encouraging.

So take a walk in your husband’s shoes. Learn about his world. What is his day like? What blesses him? What hurts him? What difficulties does he face?

Let that understanding shape how you treat him.

Empathy is about standing in someone else’s shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes. Not only is empathy hard to outsource and automate, but it makes the world a better place. Daniel H. Pink
