Hanging on the Vine

September 29, 2013

in the generous life

I was reading a great post on the Storyline blog, when one phrase jumped off the page at me.

I’ve decided for the rest of 2013 to be guided by prayer and listening, instead of planning and preparation.  Shauna Niequist

Now please understand that I have no problem with planning and preparation. I was born organized and my brain would probably implode without them.

The point that jabbed me (quite hard) is that I can run my life quite well on planning and preparation and, if I’m not careful, I forget to be quiet before God and listen.

I’m supposed to be a branch on the Vine. Without Him I can do nothing, right?

I need to be reminded of that regularly.

He knows things I don’t and He has everyone’s good in mind.
In my work, in my marriage, in everything.
I need to listen to Him and do what He says.

Thanks for this reminder and great articulation of this truth… As I am “planning and preparing” to (hopefully) become a mom, I am struggling to trust God and just rest in His peace. I have concerns about conceiving, miscarrying if I do conceive, having a baby at the right time (military spouse with lots of moving in the near future), blah, blah, blah… What a wonderful truth that I’m supposed to be a branch on the vine. To abide in Him. To find my home in Him. To rest in Him. Rest in HIS plan. Rest in His faithfulness.
Thanks again for your daily doses of truth, wisdom, and encouragement!
