How Do You Do Marriage?

July 6, 2013

in the generous life

Think of the marriages that you know. Are any of them healthy and strong? Whose marriage do you respect?

Why not ask that couple over for dinner and ask them about how they do marriage.

(In the absence of any good models, try to find another couple that wants to grow in their marriage too. Team up with them to pray, encourage and find resources to study.)

Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing. Albert Schweitzer

Do you have any good questions that you suggest to ask? Each time I meet a married couple that’s been together over 30 years or so I ask if they have any marriage advice to give and they almost look at me dumbfounded and pause long and might give a brief one or two word answer and are sometimes joking in their reply. ( like the husband says: just always tell her yes)

I’d ask them “What do you do when …” questions, like “What do you do when you disagree?” or “What do you do about holidays and in-laws?” You could also talk about problems or areas where you would like to grow and ask for their advice. Sometimes it helps to narrow it down a bit.

I’m learning to be a generous woman, so that I can be a generous wife. So any advice I can get is great. I’m making a list of married people that we can learn from, and for some reason it’s not as easy as I thought it would be to find happily married people that can be good mentors, but we are determined to find them. Thanks for sharing this post!
