A Bit of Help

March 25, 2013

in the generous life

Does your husband have a repetitive problem? He routinely can’t find his keys or his glasses. He knows he put the W2 form … somewhere. Surely there is enough gas in the car.

You can’t fix the problem for him, but you can help.

Create a drop off spot for his personal items (when you find them drop them off there). Gather all paperwork into one spot and file. Fill the gas tank each week when you shop.

Be sure to help with a smile (not a “what’s wrong with you?” attitude). We all have quirky problems we are trying work through. Be gracious and understanding.

It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do little – do what you can.  Sydney Smith

The drop-off spot idea is one that worked beautifully for us. My husband would come home and being emptying his pockets in odd spots, laying down his keys, his wallet, whatever he was carrying, all over various flat surfaces in the house. Loose change was piled up in inconvenient spots (although, now that I think of it, when is spare change ever inconvenient?) and he had trouble finding what he needed in the morning because he couldn’t always remember where he had set it down the night before. (Or maybe someone had moved something because it was in the way.) I bought a nice looking table with a couple of drawers to put in the entryway. Now, as soon he comes home (well, not immediately, since he needs to get a hug and kiss first!) he can put all his stuff on or in the table. And this is now the first place to look for whatever it is he needs to get before leaving the house. It works.
