Start Early

in the generous life

One idea that I love is the 12 Days of Christmas, but because it takes significant preparation time, I’m telling y’all about it early.

The “Twelve Days of Christmas” are the twelve days between Christmas Day and Epiphany, December 25th through January 6th (though many people celebrate it non-traditionally leading up to Christmas – December 14th through the 25th).  These days are celebrated by gift giving each day. A creative twist is giving one gift on the first day, two on the second, three on the third, and so forth.  Here are a few ideas for creating your own “Twelve Days of Christmas” fun.

Day 1 – something unique and individual – a Christmas ornament, a collectible, a nice wallet, or a framed photo.
Day 2 – anything that comes in pairs – mittens, socks, bookends, cuff links, or tickets to an event.
Day 3-6 – small gift sets, different kinds of mustard, chocolates in a sampler box, a few fishing lures, gardening tools, sticky note pads (there are some fun shapes and colors), or balloons.
Days 5-12 – This gets more challenging as the number goes up.  Look for things that are packaged in multiples and consider the small items that your husband uses frequently.  Wander through his favorite stores and look for lots of little things.

Some ideas: batteries, burnable CD’s, his favorite candies, markers, postage stamps (especially if he is a collector), coupons good for services, book plates, small tool kit with (however many) tools, cookies, or office supplies.

As you can see this gift idea will take a bit of preparation and planning. If you start now you can do much of it as you do your usual shopping (easier on your time and your pocketbook).

On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me a partridge in a pear tree.  from a Christmas carol, author unknown

cute idea but I really wouldn’t want m’love to do this. I’d have to find a someplace to put all the “stuff” and then use it. I wonder if coming up with a 12 days activity might work, like 12 hugs, 11 kisses, 10 foot squeezes, etc.

I have done this for several years with my husband- with a twist. I give him small gifts or “coupons” the 12 days before Christmas. It helps me focus on our relationship and not get caught up in the craziness of the season. The gift ideas are things like: a 12 minute massage, 8 oz of massage oil, 6 of his favorite muffins, … Sometimes I can’t get the numbers to work out perfectly, but that isn’t the point at all. Take time to nurture your marriage relationship because it is one of God’s greatest gifts.

After reading about it here, I did a version of this a couple years ago, and it was fun. My husband loved it, and it was a lot of fun. Some things I did were 1 fixed watch, five packs of gum, a 6 pack of his favorite soda, 8 combs (he always loses combs!), 10 cups of coffee (a gift card at his favorite coffee place), and last, but not least, a dozen pairs of socks.

I have done this for my husband in the past and he loved the idea. He had no idea what was going on on the first day when I handed him a gift that said “On the first day of Christmas, your true love gave to you…” I’m hoping to do it again this year if I can get all my ducks in a row!

I’m planning this for the first time for my hubby. I’m so excited!! An idea a friend had for day 2 is a 2-piece lingerie for me :) So it’d be a gift for both of us. Also, I’m planning on downloading and burning some of his favorite romantic songs onto a CD (so 12 songs, day 12). $10 gift card for Starbucks on day 10….just a few more ideas.
