What Do You Think?

May 9, 2012

in the generous life

I think I was born with a question in my mouth (though I’m sure it took me several months to figure out just how to voice it).

One of the things I love to do is ask people what they think about a particular subject. 1) Inquiring minds want to know and 2) I think it’s a lovely way of saying “I value you” and “I want to know you.”

Why not ask your husband what he thinks about the movie you just watched, a magazine article or the latest political speech. Let him know that what he thinks matters to you (and learn something interesting about your man too).

Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!  Dr. Suess

Great prompt! Robert and I can spend the entire evening/morning (anytime) just talking through and about a concept or experience.

You’ve nailed it though – as a spouse you need to be asking because you’re truly interested in showing you value their opinion, not just as an exercise to disagree…

Questions? Yes, please! I love getting to know people through questions, that is if I can learn to shut up enough to listen! I had a friend make a resolution to find out 12 new things about her husband this year and that sounded like such a fun challenge. No way to do that but than to ask questions.

Absolutely right. People love it when you ask for their opinions. This is a great thing to do in any kind of relationship, a real self-esteem booster for the person who now feels valued and heard.
