Small Groups Revisited

July 24, 2011

in the generous life

A little over a year ago, I started meeting with a couple of friends once a week.

From the original post: Two ladies and I meet weekly to encourage each other (if we draw another lady, we’ll break into two groups of two).  We talk about our lives and what we sense God wants to do in our lives, ask each other accountability questions (of our own making) and pray with and for each other.  We don’t give each other advice (unless asked for), but mostly just encourage each other to listen to God and do what He says. It’s still a very new thing and already I can see that this will challenge me in every way (including my marriage relationship).

I’m still meeting, though my “group” is currently two.  It has been incredibly helpful for me.  I have been challenged to grow.  I’ve faced my own bad attitudes (OK, I think it’s called sin).  I’m staying on track in my marriage and with other relationships.  I’ve met goals and am well on my way in following my dreams.  The support and encouragement has been wonderful.

I would encourage y’all to consider doing something similar (in person is the best, but Skype, phone or email would work). Grab a friend or two and begin simply.  Pray for each other.  Listen to each others stories.  Create a few accountability questions to ask each week.  Encourage each other to look for God’s handiwork in your lives.  Pray for and look for His direction.  Be the body of Christ to each other.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up …  1 Thessalonians 5:11a  NIV

I’m in a group that does this and we meet monthly. It truly is a blessing to have support and love from other women from all walks of life.

I have been praying almost weekly on the phone with my dear friend and prayer buddy, for going on 6 or 7 years now. As a matter of fact, she told me about Generous Wife. What a huge blessing to connect each week or two, as we are able. We share our daily struggles, lift up needs of loved ones and have seen God work through our humble prayers over and over. It is one of the highlights of my week! We are always amazed that with 5 kids between us and a three hour time difference, God helps us to carve out the time, and it is so worth it.
