Being Understood

in the generous life

Don’t assume that you understand your husband. When he speaks, really listen and, if there is any room for doubt, ask a question or two so that he has ample opportunity to make himself plain.

The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.  Ralph Nichols

i’m finding it very hard to “really listen” to my husband. we are having a balance of power issue and have been for a few years. the issue seems to be that he is passive in expressing his feelings about things and therefore, i take the lead (because someone has to right?) and then it becomes a vicious cycle in which he feels he can’t express his feelings. well that is the fault of two ppl – not just one (meaning me)….very frustrated. very hurt. very alone.
