You’ve Been Flamingo’d

May 26, 2010

in the generous life

I was shopping today and ran across a set of small plastic flamingos attached to clips.  The set is supposed to be used to weigh down the edge of a table cloth so it doesn’t blow away in the wind, perfect for outdoor gatherings.  The flamingos made me smile because of a fun memory.

Years ago my husband and I had a friend.  At some point in a conversation she made a funny comment about those plastic pink flamingos that people sometimes put in their yards.  A few days later my husband and I ran across one in a store and bought it.  It mysteriously appeared in her yard one night.  She had a good laugh about it, but then it disappeared and reappeared in our yard, of all things.  I don’t know how many times we managed to sneak that dumb bird back and forth into our yards, but it was a silly game that blessed us all.

Well, I bought the set of flamingo clips, added a “you’ve been flamingo’d” note and tucked one where my husband will find it sooner or later.  I know he will enjoy the memory and, who knows, it may birth another game of sneaky flamingos.

What I gather from this idea is that a conversation, an item or a trip will trigger fun memories.  Be on the look out for those things to remind your husband of good times.  Silly is OK.

my husband and i have a silly game like this! there was a golden calf glued to a pedestal when we moved into our townhouse, which we asked to have removed. they unglued it, but left it behind, so now we take turns hiding it in different spots around the house! i just found it in the toolbox!

My sister and I are still exchanging gifts wrapped in the same ugly brown cow-printed paper my mother bought when we were in Switzerland for language study before moving to Africa… and that was twenty years ago!

It’s fun to keep memories like this alive.

We have a similar game, my parents bought us a souvernir (very ugly) elephant which fits in the palm of your hand… for all of our married life (nearly 20 yrs), we have hidden it on each other, sometimes it goes “missing” for months at a time, other times the hiding place is fairly simple. No one ever speaks of the elephant, it just appears and disappears.

I love this! My in-laws and another couple they’re friends with have a little rubber frog that they sneak back and forth, and have been for years. At my wedding reception, of all places, my mother-in-law’s friend, who was also our caterer, decided to put the frog on MY PLATE, knowing I would laugh and then pass it on to my mother-in-law. Such fun!
