I’m going to meddle a bit (might as well call it what it is). In talking about planning your holidays you need to consider the following:
God is very clear – when we marry, we LEAVE our home of origin and CLEAVE to our spouse, creating a new family and home. This, of course, does not mean that we stop loving or respecting our parents, it just means that our spouse and our marriage relationship takes precedence over any other relationships, even those we have with parents or other family members.
In practical terms at the holidays, it means that we take into consideration what is good for our spouse, that we stand up for our spouse if a family member gets out of line, and we don’t ask our spouse to be someone they are not at family gatherings. And, I hope it goes without saying, we don’t treat our spouse differently in front of our family than at other times.
I realize that this can make for some stresses and strains during the holiday season, but I strongly encourage you to highly value your husband and your marriage during the coming holidays.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, ad they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 NKJV
