Pretty You

in the generous life

I have this friend who always looks great (and she’s nice too!  Sheesh!).  Anyhow, I realized one day that she must just “make time and energy” for it.  We all have our priorities and the same 24 hours to use (and, honestly, it just peeves me when appearance becomes a god), but there is something about taking care of yourself and looking good that is healthy. (Thank you, Mindi!)  :-)

That said, let’s take some time to consider self care and dressing in flattering ways.  Go through your makeup and wardrobe and get rid of the ugly stuff (y’all know what I’m talking about) and things you never use or wear (it’s always nice to slim down possessions).  When you make new purchases, go for the flattering styles and colors.  If you don’t know what looks good on you, ask a friend to shop with you.  Do some research with self help books or websites (if someone knows of a good site, please leave a comment with this tip and share).  Consider different clothing styles, try a new lotion, change your hair color, or cut back on (or increase) the amount of jewelry you wear.

The worse that can happen is you’ll find out you don’t like something and you have to try again.  The best is that you find a style that you really like and you feel pretty. (Husband’s have been known to be blessed by just the attempt.)

The difference between try and triumph is a little umph. Author Unknown

I have subscribed for several years to a site called Missus Smarty Pants. 29.99 a year gets you a weekly email from MSP designed for your body type and style. Hair and makeup suggestions come during the year plus suggestions for accessories etc, etc. It has been so helpful know what looks good on my body and what colors flatter; whether I shop retail or consignment I always look great and don’t waste money on something I purchased on impulse and then never wear. You can find her at — and affiliate of the FlyLady! Thanks for the great site!

I found that asking my husband what he found attractive helped me update my look. I had no idea what he found attractive. I thought I was putting effort into this area, but had no clue what he found attractive. I found makeup and fashion tips on magazine websites like glamour mag. and style magazines by people and so on. Wearing 1-2 pieces of jewelry really completes an outfit. I find earrings especially do this. Not only has my husband liked the changes, but I have as well. It feels good to look good and put a little effort into my appearance.

Another suggestion is to take your husband shopping for clothes with you. I’m sometimes surprised at what my husband likes — or doesn’t like — and if I want to dress to please him, it helps me to get his input. And it’s fun, too! We went shopping just recently together and I got some clothes he really liked and feel great about wearing them now.

Here’s a great website that I found to help with fashion: She sends out a free weekly email with general tips & then you can buy more specific tips for your body type. The price is very decent ($29.95 for a year or &9.95 for 3 months). If you don’t know your body type, she will define it after you give a description. She also goes into makeup occasionally too.

Bev recommends and Color Me Beautiful (not sure whether she meant the book or the site, but the concept shows up in a number of places and is very helpful when it comes to finding the right colors)
